The Fashion design industry employed about 17,000 individuals in 2004.

Of those, one quarter were self employed and another 25 percent worked for large wholesale apparel manufacturers. Fashion designers create wearable items. This encompasses all types of clothing including lingerie, casual wear, formal wear, business attire, and outer wear. Footwear, eyewear, accessories, jewelry, and head coverings are also designed and created by fashion designers. In order to find work in the fashion industry you will need an associate's or bachelor's degree in fine arts with fashion design as a major focus. The fashion industry is a competitive field where a degree and experience will give you a significant edge.
