Careers in Fashion Can Be Quite Competitive

Before discussing actual careers, it's important to highlight how competitive the fashion industry can be. Because of the glamour, money, travel, and perpetual promise of overnight success, many people from all walks of life are attracted to the fashion industry. This is why securing a fashion degree is so crucial to any successful fashion career. With so many entrants, it's necessary to distinguish yourself by proving that you have mastered the ropes and paid your dues through formal instruction and training.

Different Types of Careers in fashion

Probably the most famous fashion career is that all the model. Unfortunately, this is the one occupation that you can’t really get a degree for. Either you're born with "it" or not. But there are other types of fashion careers such as photographers, fashion designers, marketers, PR analyst, manufacturers, event planners, audiovisual technicians, Web designers, and a whole host of other administrative support positions. For any one of these positions, it's possible to go to school, receive formal instruction, earn a degree, and join the fashion industry.

Developing Contacts

Formal education is not only important because of what you learn, it is also important because of who you meet. The fashion industry is like almost any other industry in that knowing people can make a huge difference. Your career services office or your alumni department will be able to you in touch with useful contacts who will provide you with guidance, interviews, positions, and other contacts. Do not overlook the importance of networking.
