As a fashion school student, you'll have many opportunities to train in the skills you love. You should be prepared to soak up as much fashion design information as you can. The list of classes below will be particularly useful to you.

At a fashion school, you can take a variety of paths to your degree. Some students major in interior design and others specialize in textiles or merchandising studies. It's important to take all the classes you can in order to find your strengths and expand your skills. These classes will prepare you to begin a career in fashion design.

  • Marketing and sales. Even the flightiest designers should have some skills in business management to keep turning a profit. In marketing and business classes, you will learn how to manage a budget, sell your product, find your client base and get your clothes into stores.
  • History of Fashion. Fashion is like music, constantly referring to that which came before. Fashion designers can't create a fresh spin on an old idea unless they know where to start. In this class you will learn fashion by era, including the styles and influences that will surely inspire you to create twenty-first century pieces.
  • Textiles. In this class you will study the different kinds of materials used to make clothing, bags, shoes, and home decorations. Fabrics and prints make a beautiful backdrop for good design; they provide a foundation for your piece. Interior designers should take note of this class, as couches, carpets and wallpapers are covered as well.

Every fashion school student should have a well-rounded education. A good background will give you a solid foundation for your talent to build on.
